Margaret qualified as a chartered librarian and worked in the private sector. After a career break raising children, she resumed her career by joining public libraries specialising in information and reference enquiry work, in particular developing expertise and training others in using online resources.

She came out of retirement to part-time assist her husband, Mike Leyland (FD, Biostatus), in financial accounts and general bookkeeping.
