Professor Paul Smith

Professor Paul J Smith received his BSc in Medical Microbiology from the University of Bristol (UK) in 1974, and received his PhD in 1977 from the University of Manchester (UK) for studies on cellular radiobiology at the Paterson Institute, Manchester. He has been active in the field of cellular responses to DNA damage for over 20 years.

Between 1977 and 1979 he was a NERC (Canada) Research Fellow in the Biology Branch of Chalk River Nuclear Laboratories (CRNL) Canada and later as a research scientist funded by the US National Cancer Institute investigating DNA repair in persons genetically predisposed to cancer. In 1982 he joined the Medical Research Council Centre (Cambridge, UK) and as a senior scientist led a programme directed towards the identification of factors controlling cellular sensitivity to DNA damage.

His publications and continued interest in this theme are exemplified by his recent editorship of a book on DNA repair and recombination (IRL Press, Oxford). In 1995 he was appointed to the new Chair of Cancer Biology at the University of Wales College of Medicine. He is also chair of the scientific advisory committee of the International Society for Analytical Cytology (ISAC).

His collaborations involve drug design and synthesis and target identification while translational research activities have led to clinical trials of a new anticancer agent. He has recently co-ordinated a consortium of European laboratories with joint interests in anticancer therapy and cytometry. He is currently active in patenting new cytometric probes and analysis systems. An important aspect of his future work is the development of mathematical modelling and computer simulations for tumour heterogeneity and drug responsiveness.

Paul brings a good deal of entrepreneurial and creative flair to the team along with many years of experience in the key markets of interest to Biostatus. His technical capabilities are second to none and as such he is able to provide invaluable expert advice on a wide range of technical issues.

In addition Paul is extremely well known on the International research circuit, and is highly respected by key opinion leaders all over the world.
